Galinhos is situated the farthest up the coast and has certainly evolved from the times when it was just a small fishermen village. It is said that the splendid combination of the lagoas (lakes), the dunes and the sea is almost dazzling for the untrained eye. Galinhos is located 160 km from Natal and 50 km from São Miguel do Gostoso. At low tide, one can even reach Galinhos by walking on the beach from Caicara, which is a unique experience, enjoying the multitude of vegetation and the breathtaking seaside scenery. The romantic atmosphere in Galinhos makes you feel exuberant. If you want a quiet place where you can escape from civilization, Galinhos is what you should be looking for.

Natal has a typical tropical climate, with warm to hot temperatures and high relative humidity all throughout the year. However, these conditions are relieved by a near absence of extreme temperatures and pleasant trade winds blowing from the ocean. Known as the “City of Sun” and also as “The City of Dunes” Natal is located in the northeastern tip of Brazil. Lying about 15 degrees south of the equator the sun shines on for more than 3,000 hours every year and the days seem to last forever. The average temperature in Natal is about 27 degrees Celsius. During the summer season it normally reaches above 30 degrees Celsius with the water at a soothing 26 degrees. The greatest amount of rain falls between March and July.

The beach is famous for good winds and has become a kite surf paradise with many Europeans and Americans enjoying the good winds and the cozy place. Cumbuco is developing slowly in a positive way with more hotels and also a golf resort by Vila Galé hotels from Portugal. Cumbuco has some amazing sand dunes where buggy tours can be made to see more of this beautiful region.

Jericoacoara is a virgin beach hidden behind the dunes of the west coast of Ceará, Brazil. Selected by the Washington Post as one of the Top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, Jeri, as it is called colloquially by locals, consists of deep blue lagoons, calm seas and huge dunes.

Picture of Jericoacoara

Since 1984, the area around Jericoacoara was declared an Environmental Protection Area (APA) and became a National Park in 2002. This brought many building restrictions and tourism controls to help preserve the area.

The distance to bigger cities and the difficulties of access also helped to keep the beach and the village isolated. Only 15 years ago, Jeri was a fishing village, without any contact with modern civilization, where electricity was generated by diesel engines and street illumination came from the moon and the stars. After the Washington Post selection was published, tourism grew rapidly and the beach village became one of the most popular destinations on the Brazilian coast. Electricity arrived in the village in 1998 and today, hot showers and air conditioning are no longer luxuries. However, since the illumination of the streets is forbidden by local law, the moon and stars still give street illumination.
Jericoacoara, Ceará, Brazil

The trip to Jeri represents a natural obstacle but it is part of the experience. The road from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara presents beaches and rustic villages. The last 45 minutes you complete off-road “on-sand”, among dunes and along a beach.

The village has streets covered by the sand, which comes from the dunes in front of the sea. Jericoacoara is also used for windsurfing and sailing.

Fortaleza is the state capital of Ceará, located in Northeastern Brazil. With a population of over 3.4 million (metropolitan region), Fortaleza has an area of 313 square kilometres (121 sq mi). To the north of the city lies the Atlantic Ocean; to the south are the cities of Pacatuba, Eusébio, Maracanaú and Itaitinga; to the east is the county of Aquiraz and the Atlantic Ocean; and to the west is the city of Caucaia. Residents of the city are known as Fortalezenses. On Beira-mar Avenue, kiosks and restaurants offer regional seafood, Sushi, Brazilian dishes and many more varieties of food; there are also many bars which provide anything from beer to cocktails. At the handcraft fair (the feirinhá), many stands show embroidery and leather work, as well as jewellery and regional food or artisinal cachaca’s. Of the urban beaches in Fortaleza, Praia do Futuro is the most frequented and is characterized by restaurants along the beach, each one with its own musical style and decoration.

The statue of Iracema refers to the legend of the Indian which was depicted in a novel by José de Alencar, a famous Brazilian authour who orginated from Fortaleza. Mucuripe Beach holds the Lighthouse Museum. Opened in 1846, the lighthouse was active for 111 years, until it was closed in 1957. Dragão do Mar Art and Culture Center holds the Cearense Culture Memorial, the Contemporary Art Museum and Rubens de Azevedo Planetarium, as well as movies and theaters. Besides this, many old warehouses were refurbished and became bars and restaurants surrounding the central area of town. There are cuisine and show options in the evening. It is most certainly one of the trendiest places to be seen.

Nightlife includes bars, nightclubss and restaurants, opened every day in the week, besides the characteristic comedy shows that have introduced nationally famous artists. An off-season carnival, Fortal, happens in Fortaleza in July. With a remodeled structure in 2008, the event has parking lots, bleachers, stalls and food court. The event lasts 4 days and around 1.5 million people enjoy the nationally famous axé music bands. Fortaleza also stages music festivals in Brazil, such as Ceará Music. This yearly event includes local artists and international pop rock stars for 3 days. Around 25 thousand people enjoy the fun and several concerts, electronic music tents, and fashion shows.
